Retired-Mulch - 100% Recycled Rubber
Reduce Serious Playground Injuries: Install A Better Surface

This year, at least 140,000 children nationwide will be injured in falls from playground equipment. In fact, of all serious playground injuries, about 9 out of 10 are the results of falls-causing head and/or internal injuries, fractures, and in some cases even death. The lifetime health care costs resulting from these accidents, and the subsequent legal action against communities and school districts, will run into the tens of million of dollars.- Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

The Better Surface is Retired-Mulch

Does not attract animals or bugs.

Does not pulverize or decompose.

Meet federal flammable standards.

Non toxic and non-abrasive.

Retards weed growth.

Requires minimum, economical maintenance.

Harmless to the environment.

Soft and resilient.

Meets CPSC and ASTM guidelines.

Wont' stain clothes.

Drains quickly after rain.

What is Retired-Mulch?

Retired-Mulch is a playground safety surface material that, inch for inch, absorbs more impact in a fall than any other loose-fill material found on playgrounds today. At a compressed depth of 9 inches, laboratory tests show Retired-Mulch provides greater fall height protection than sand, gravel, wood chips and even wood mulch.

Surfacing with Retired-Mulch is easier to maintain than other common surfacing materials and does not deteriorate over time. You can feel good choosing Retired-Mulch because it's made from 100% recycled rubber from tires.

Simple Installation

Retired-Mulch Playground Safety Surface can be installed on top of most surfaces such as sand, gravel, grass or dirt. CPSC does not recommend installation of loose-fill material over hard surfaces such as asphalt or concrete.

Follow CPSC guidelines for the installation of loose-fill material, giving consideration to fall-zones around each piece. The playground area should be framed with pressure treated wood or other edging material to a height of approximately 3 inches above the height of the Retired-Mulch installation.

Periodic checks of the installation should be made to ensure maintenance of the proper depth under and around heavily used equipment. The surface should be raked and smoothed weekly.

Why not....

Sand

According to the CPSC:

Spreads easily outside of containment area; Binds together and becomes less cushioning when wet; When thoroughly wet, sand reacts as a rigid material; May be tracked out of play areas on shoes and be abrasive to floor surfaces; Adheres to clothing; Susceptible to fouling by animals.

Wood Mulch

According to the CPSC:

Rain, high humidity and freezing temperature may reduce cushioning potential: Over time, wood mulch decomposes, is pulverized and compacts; Subject to microbial growth when wet; Spreads easily outside containment area; Can be flammable.

Grass

According to the CPSC:

Grass and turf are not recommended because their effectiveness in absorbing shock during a fall can be reduced considerably due to wear and tear and various environmental conditions.

The Retired-Mulch Solution

The surface under and around playground equipment can be a major factor in determining the injury-causing potential of a fall. It is self evident that a fall onto a shock absorbing surface is less likely to cause a serious injury than a fall onto a hard surface Because head impact injuries from a fall have the potential for being life threatening, the more shock absorbing a surface can be make the more is the likelihood that the severity of the injury will be reduced. How ever it should be recognized that all injuries due to falls cannot be prevented no matter what playground surfacing material is used.

How much Will I need?

The most often used depth is 4 inches. Granule dimensions vary from 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch size. Multiply the square footage of the area x 5 lbs. For example if your play area size is 10'x10' you would take 100 square feet (10x10=100 square feet) x 5lbs. You would need 500 lbs. of Retired-Mulch. Retired-Mulch is packaged in 35lb bags for easy installation. Divide the total pounds needed by 35 to get the number of bags needed, 500÷35=14 bags.

How Much Will It Cost?

A 35 lb. bag is $15.25. We offer free delivery with the purchase any Gera Gardens Play Set. Also available in 2.5 cubic yard nylon sacks. Approx. weight of each sack is 1400-1700 pounds for $625.-$725. Depending on the size of the sac. Prices are for picked up, Call for delivery prices.
